photography jargon simplified

Beginner, don’t be dismayed! It can be really easy to understand your camera and how the settings in the exposure triangle work the way they do. This explanation is the way I personally think of my camera as an eye:

The sensor in your camera is the brain. It receives data and information.
ISO is how sensitive the ‘eye’ is to the light. The higher the number, the more sensitive the eye.
Aperture is like the pupil. The wider it is (the lower the f/stop number), the more light is allowed into the eye. Over exposure is like when you’re inside where your pupils are more dilated to compensate for lower light. When you step outside, everything it too bright and your pupils have to get smaller to compensate for so much light. Then when you go back in, everything is too dark (under exposed) because your eye’s aperture needs a moment to open up and let in the light.
Shutter speed is like blinking. The faster it blinks, the less light is allowed in and vice versa.

As painfully simple as this is, it really doesn’t get too much more complicated than that – the explenations just do!
How about everyone else? If you had a total beginner ask you to explain how a camera works, what would you tell them?

i believe all of you have received the message from ripples number regarding mother's day this sunday..and i agree with the message that WE are the ones to make our moms happy =) well not just this sunday but everyday..haha

but anyway...regarding this sunday,

the celebration will be after service. bring your mothers down to our usual meeting place! i am estimating it to be like around 12p.m. when you all bring your moms down...and then we will have some refreshments for them and a little game i would say... yup the activities are all planned out! and we are also gna present a gift to our moms! =) so come with your mom alright! and do let us know if ur coming cause we need to prepare the gifts!

Love Our Enemies

If anyone says, "I love God," yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen. 1 John 4:20

"If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that?" Matthew 5:46-47

Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth. 1 John 3:18

There are many different types of love, each with many sides and aspects. One of the many flaws of the English language is that we have a single word to describe them all, so it's understandable that we may fail to distinguish between that which we feel for our husband or wife, and that which compels us to feed the poor. This linguistic limitation has the most impact when it tricks us into believing that love is a feeling, and worse, one over which we have no control.

We don't usually choose whom we love romantically, and we may fall in and out of love at the whim of our emotions. Since this is the kind of love with which we are the most familiar (and perhaps the most comfortable), we struggle when we hear Jesus speak of "loving our enemies." A contradiction forms in our mind as we think, "How can I love them? I don't feel a shred of sympathetic emotion for them at all!"

The love of which Jesus speaks is not a feeling in any sense of the word. It is a decision resulting in action. It is a choice you make that has nothing whatsoever to do with how you feel, and quite often, occurs in spite of a feeling to the contrary. This kind of love judges the needs of a person but never the person themselves, and responds according to the gravity of the need, never the character of the person.

Understand that you must absolutely restrain whatever you feel for a person and treat them with as much compassion and kindness as you would show your own mother or child. This is the kind of love that Christ demands - not a feeling, but rather a spirit of service, selflessness and humility. It is the ability to give to others with no regard to what they can do to repay you, what they feel for you or what you feel for them.

This kind of love is extremely hard. Unlike romantic love, which naturally drives us to do wonderful things for our spouse, loving our enemies goes against what our sinful nature desires us to do. It is far from effortless. Very often, when we stand at the brink of loving our enemies, our sinful nature cries out, "I don't want to do this!" and stands poised to halt our progress. We have to push through it. We have to resist the notion that something so difficult and so contrary to our natural desire could be called "love". It is, in fact the greatest kind of love. It is the kind of love that God demonstrated when He saved us while we were His enemies. (Romans 5:10)

There are opportunities for each of us to put this kind of love into practice every day, but it takes extraordinary courage and faith to even recognize these opportunities, let alone act on them. Imagine a coworker that you simply cannot get along with who is on the verge of making a huge mistake that will get her fired. Our sinful nature revels in this, and tells us that it serves her right. Let her get fired! Yet, if we are to love as God loves, we cannot let this situation unfold. We must intervene and prevent her from making that mistake despite all objections from our emotions. This is not at all what we will "feel" like doing, and that is why it requires such courage and faith. And what reward will we get? Perhaps she will thank us, or perhaps she will tell us to mind our own business. Yet, our love does not expect her appreciation. Our motives are simple and pure - love her as God loves her.

Remember that this kind of love is not about emotion, it is about action. Never stop looking for these opportunities to act in your life, and don't give in to the nagging voice which insists that love must always be easy and rewarding. Don't stop when you are on the brink of kindness because it doesn't feel right, for it often doesn't. This kind of love can be hard and uncomfortable, but it is the most important of all, for it is by this kind of love that others will know that Christ lives in you.

dear Teens,

hope you all enjoyed the short photography session today and learned something to bring home with you.

there are many technicalities in photography which are impossible to cover in only a few hours, and i do not expect you to remember all of them, but here are few that you can always keep with you:

1. ISO: use higher ISO settings for dark or indoor shots to get higher shutter speed and lesser blur pictures

2. White balance: to get photos with natural colours, set it according to the environment where you take the pictures e.g. daylight/cloudy, tungsten, etc.

3. Rule of thirds: basically, stay away from the centre of the screen

so please share what you have learnt today with those who could not come, and i hope you are all on your way to taking "the perfect picture" :)

Hey guys and girls!

How's it going?
Just droppin by to share some thoughts about a sermon by pastor Kelvin Sim I heard recently. It was mainly about how we relate to others (a bit of focus on BGR ). SO here goes.
--

The world is based upon relativity. We act mostly based upon our feelings, and the problem with this is that our feelings are often distorted by what we call perspective.
Everyone has their own perspective and point of view, so what happens is that there is no "absolute right" or "absolute truth" because everyone can argue that it "is the right thing to do in my perspective".
So "relatively", what we think is true becomes 'our truth' and what others think is true becomes "their truth", and thus no one is ever wrong because they were just doing what was "true and right" to them. Do you see the problem here?
Eventually, people will become deluded and they can get away with anything because "if you think it's right, then it's right". Don't you see this happening already with the crazy nonsense about so-called "human rights" for legalising same-sex marriages in certain parts of the world?

What's so wrong about having our own perspective on things?
1) Our perspective is earthly, therefore imperfect, flawed.
For example, stuff you see going on in Hollywood makes you think "it's alright to do this because they're doing it too". We don't have to look too far for examples. Even your friends in school or wherever else could be doing stuff which might make you think that "it's alright because they're doing it". You all know what's so dangerous about this.

2) Perspective based on earthly standards is always governed by preferences. What's wrong about this? Preferences change.
You might think you like a certain something/someone today, but what about 20 years down the road? 30? 40? Are you sure that you're able to stay committed all the way?
People are meant to be loved, and things are meant to be used. NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND. Sadly, the latter is what we see and hear most of the time these days.

So how do we do it? What's our perspective supposed to be based on?
Well, that's simple. To be able to stay committed (essentially, in terms of relationships, it means for life), it requires conviction.
Conviction does not come from an earthly source. Conviction is only from the One who is unchanging. Love is meant to be based upon conviction. Therefore, relationships must be based on an absolute standard, and there is only one absolute standard; God's standard.

Men and women were originally created with a righteous intellect and a rational, moral mind. God made man in His image.
However, after sin came into the world every person is born with a sinful nature (except Jesus of course) and we lose the original morality that was created in us.
Jesus came to restore the image of God in us. He came to reconcile us to God so that we will be able to live by His standards.

Watch your thoughts, for they become words.
Watch your words, they become actions.
Watch your actions, they become your habits.
Watch your habits, they become your character.
Watch your character, they become your destiny.

Okay, so some application now.
Let's be honest, dating flippantly makes a mockery of God's original design for men and a women. God did not design humans to toy with each others' feelings. Relationships are meant to be pure, and to be kept pure.
This might make some of you go "why so serious?" but it has to be said:
A relationship between a man and a woman is meant to lead to marriage. You don't ask someone to be your girlfriend/boyfriend just because you feel like it. Is he/she someone you would want to marry?

If you're on the verge of asking someone to get into a relationship with you, I suggest you stop, and pray about it. A LOT. Seek God and wait for His answer. Don't jump to conclusions if you think you've heard an answer. Seek counsel with perhaps your parents as well until you have confirmed that God has answered you, then act based on His answer.
If you're already in a relationship and you did not seek God's will before you got into it, I suggest you do the same as mentioned above.

This applies not only for relationships, but for any other decision at all.
Our perspective is NEVER as good as God's perspective.
Live by the standards of Him who lives in us. Jesus has freed us from all chains and bondages. There is no reason for us to follow earthly views and standards.

Romans 12:2
Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Hello everyone from Ripples,

For this week, we will be having some fun on Saturday. Its like a ripples sports day kinda thing =) We've decided to have a futsal game or a captain ball game if the girls prefer to play captain ball. The sports day carry on despite the weather because our location is shaded.

The Details are:
1. Date: 25/4/09
2. Place: U1 futsal court (it is just right beside Summit USJ)
3. Time: Meet at 3.30pm in church or meet at 4pm at U1 futsal court if you have transport
4. Game Time: 4.00pm-6.00pm
5. Fee: Just prepare RM5 =)

Tranposrt information: If you have your own transport please meet there yourself because we do not have enough drivers. If you do not know the place, ask your parents drop you off at Summit USJ, we'll send someone to walk you over to the court. i'll advise you guys who stay nearby each other to car pool =)

For those who seriously needs transport from church to the U1 court, give me (Andy) a call as soon as possible. i'll work something out.

Hello ripples,

Our RipTreat is less than a week away. I hope all of you are already getting excited about it or overexcited for our very first Ripples Camp. Hope you all have a great week ahead, and take care of your health and all. Don't fall sick or you won't be able to enjoy to the fullest =)

Meeting details on this Saturday:

Place: Meet in Church CDPC
Time: 9.00am - 9.15am for arrival
Briefing: 9.15am-9.30am
Departure: We will leave CDPC at 9.30am, latest is 9.45am
Journey: About 2 hours.

Please don't be late because if one person is late, it will delay the whole group and we will have less free time. So please do be on time.

Breakfast is on your own before you come, and as an addition to the packing list, bring plastic bags to put your dirty clothes or any other things =)

Hey guys here's the packing list for the up coming camp...

Prerequisite: Please refrain from packing into a roller bag (anything with wheels) as you may have difficulty carrying it to the required location. Preferably use something you can carry on your back, comfortably (a roller bag strapped to your back with raffia string is not comfortable). And of course, try not to pack more than you can carry, or you'll be forced to hire our incredibly expensive and non-existent bag carrying services.

1. Sleeping Bag
2. Pillow case/pillow if you prefer your own
3. On top of what you’ll wear for 3 days, bring three to four extra sets of cloths to get a little dirty/wet/sweaty in
4. Torchlight
5. Insect repellent
6. Sports shoes (and socks of course)

9. Towel
10. Snacks
11. Bible
12. Water bottle
13. Drugs (your medication, if you're on any/cell phones/things you cant live without)

Okay peeps. Ripples will be held on Saturday this week (what... two saturdays in a row?) for the simple reason that it's valentines day, and that we want to ruin any chance you had at having a romantic dinner.

No, I jest.

We will be having a forum, entitled "aRe yoU IN love?" which will be held at 6:30, right after worship, at W-9-2/Mark/the place next door to the sanctuary where we eat snacks and drink milo. It will begin with a discussion on certain preselected topics, but will be open to the floor for questions and contributions from you guys & gals too.

Anyways please feel free to invite your friends, and while you're at it, bring some junk food along as well because as always, excess sugar makes teenagers happy. =)

As you all know, our Lantern Festival celebration scheduled this Saturday had been postponed to the 20th of September. On the 20th we will go to Sang Lee to celebrate with the villagers there. Those who wants to go please inform me a.s.a.p. so that i can arrange transport.

As for this Saturday, we are going to be party packers again!
Kok Wai wants us to pack another 300 party packs. So we will need all your helping hands =)

No courtship, then how do i talk to girls?

Last week I asked the question “If I say goodbye to courtship (for now), what do I say hello to?” I mentioned three things: say hello to the Lord, say hello to more friends, and say hello to serving. But how do we relate to girls – to the people we are trained to dream about all our lives?

Treat them like sisters. In 1 Timothy 5:2, Paul commands Timothy to treat “younger women as sisters, in all purity.” This is God’s word for young, single men. Treat all young women like sisters.

This means, treat them like a sister! Encourage them, point them to godliness, guard their hearts, serve them, enjoy worshipping the Savior with them, correct them (as needed). And (for the girls’ benefit), guys, be creative with this! Refuse the temptation to sulk through singlehood. Enjoy this season and draw in groups of girls and guys to enjoy it with you. Plan trips. Plan events. Brainstorm encouraging things to do for and with the girls.

One compelling example of this is how Kevin Shipp used his singlehood. As you know, he was married last weekend after spending some twenty odd years single. Kevin constantly planned things for groups of girls and guys to do. He took groups to DC and NYC. He took groups to punk rock shows. And much much much more!

However, this also means, do not treat them in any other way than you would your own sister. Do not flirt with them, do not lead them on, do not (with your words or actions) allow them to assume you will pursue them at any point in the future, carefully subdue unruly affections. In all your words and actions, guard their hearts. Be wise and think these things through carefully.

Specifically, guys, I want to encourage you to carefully choose how to communicate with girls. There are several methods of communication, like facebook, txt messaging, gchat, and iChat, which seem to allow unguarded and unintentional conversation and interaction. Oftentimes, we can chat with someone intentionally on the Internet and yet gradually (as sin usually works) slide into more flirtatious, unhelpful dialogue. The danger with these conversations is that they often leave girls wondering why you said that or how you said that, because you were not there to clarify. They, in effect, provide a longer leash for romantic imagination and, in so doing, can disrupt a girl’s undistracted devotion to the Lord.

Finally, we are to treat all girls like sisters; meaning, we are to be impartial. We are not to single out some girls to receive our attention, while neglecting other girls. This is implicit of Paul’s use of “all” in 1 Tim 5:2. But this doesn’t mean you must have equal relationships with every girl you know, as if you must run from girl to girl updating them with more attention. The thought alone is just exhausting! But it does mean that you should carefully interact with girls, allowing no one to perceive that you relate to one girl and several girls too much and in an exclusive manner.

P.S. Fellas, if you want a real idea of how you interact with girls, ask one of the intern girls or other mature girls in VFC! The answer may be shocking.

Pray that we will be able to obtain approval to visit the Selayang hospital children's ward
